Jose Mourinho's "fun" claim contradicts Kevin De Bruyne over Chelsea treatment

Jose Mourinho ’s new claims about his treatment of Kevin De Bruyne at their former club Chelsea appear to have contradicted the Belgian’s own views about his time working under the Portuguese.

The Blues signed De Bruyne from Genk in 2012, but following Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge a year later, the midfielder saw his opportunities limited.

He would make just nine appearances under Mourinho, starting only five times, with the Belgian star mainly left out of Chelsea’s squads altogether.

The midfielder would spend only six months playing under Mourinho, before the manager sanctioned a January 2014 transfer move to Wolfsburg.

It has proven to be a catastrophic error from the Blues, with De Bruyne going to on to bee one of the world’s best midfielders.

He left Wolfsburg after 18 months to join Manchester City, for whom he has gone on to score 67 goals and notch 107 assists on the way to winning three Premier League titles.

ollowing his departure from Stamford Bridge, De Bruyne made it clear his relationship with Mourinho was one of the main reasons for his exit.

“I trained well. Jose Mourinho never explained why I was rarely allowed to play,” De Bruyne told German newspaper Sport Bild in 2015.

“Maybe it would have all gone differently if Chelsea had paid €45m for me instead of €8m to Genk back in 2012."I would have had a different standing, and got more chances.”

But Mourinho has appeared to contradict De Bruyne, insisting that he enjoyed working with the midfielder.

“My story with Kevin was fun. It worked well in the end for him,” the Portuguese told talkSPORT.

“I arrived at Chelsea in my second spell and we go to Asia to play some matches and to train. Kevin was supposed to e with us in another group of players who would leave on loan after Asia.

“He impressed me so much that I made the decision; 'I don't want this kid to go out on loan, I want this kid to stay'.

“He was supposed to go on loan and he wasn't happy to stay and grow up there. He by himself put a lot of pressure to leave.”

Despite it now being widely seen as a major error, Mourinho also insisted that he has no regrets about his decision to allow De Bruyne to leave.

“He knew very well what he wanted. And he was not ready to have that season at Chelsea where lots of good players were in the same team,” he said.

“He didn't have that patience to work, to play, to not play, to be on the bench. He was not ready for that. He was ing from a season where he basically played every minute.

“He was not so happy to aept a situation like that at Chelsea. Sometimes we coaches we make mistakes and we don't consider that this player has the potential in the future.

“But this was not the case. I saw the potential to do it - but he was just very clear on his mind and he knew perfectly what he wanted.”
